Elder abuse is a distressing reality that affects many seniors, not online in Chennai but all over the world. To bring light to this issue, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006 As the population ages, it becomes crucial to address this issue and protect our elderly loved ones.
Based on Insights from the Helpage India study on Elder Abuse in 2022 and interactions with elderly individuals, the most commonly reported forms of elder abuse include 'disrespect' (56.5%), 'verbal abuse' (36.1%), and 'beating/slapping' (30%). However, it is worth noting that a significant proportion of respondents (22.7%) reported not knowing what elder abuse is. This highlights the need for increased awareness and education on the topic.

What is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse refers to any intentional or negligent action that causes harm or distress to an older adult. It can take various forms, including physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, neglect and abandonment, financial exploitation, and even sexual abuse. Sadly, many seniors suffer in silence, making it crucial to raise awareness and address this issue head-on.
What are the Types of Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse can manifest in different ways, each with its own detrimental effects on seniors' physical and mental well-being. The types of elder abuse include:
Physical Abuse: This involves inflicting physical harm or pain, such as hitting, pushing, or restraining the older adult.
Emotional or Psychological Abuse: Emotional abuse encompasses acts that cause mental anguish, humiliation, or distress, such as verbal insults, threats, or constant belittlement.
Neglect and Abandonment: Neglect occurs when caregivers fail to meet the basic needs of seniors, including food, shelter, healthcare, and emotional support. Abandonment refers to the desertion of an older adult by someone responsible for their care.
Financial Exploitation: This form of abuse involves unauthorized or illegal use of an older person's funds, assets, or properties for personal gain.
Sexual Abuse: Non-consensual sexual contact or any sexual activity without the older adult's consent falls under sexual abuse.
What are the Signs of Elder Abuse?
Recognizing the signs of elder abuse is crucial for early intervention. Look out for the following indicators:
Physical injuries, unexplained bruises, or frequent falls.
Emotional distress, withdrawal, or sudden changes in behavior.
Poor personal hygiene, malnutrition, or dehydration.
Unexplained financial transactions or missing assets.
Unsanitary living conditions or signs of neglect.
Sleep disturbances, anxiety, or depression.
What to Do to Prevent Elder Abuse?
Preventing elder abuse requires collective effort and vigilance. Here are some proactive steps to safeguard our seniors:
Keep an open communication and maintain regular contact with elderly loved ones.
Educate caregivers, family members, and the community about the signs and consequences of elder abuse.
Encourage intergenerational bonding and respect for the elderly.
Establish support networks and seek professional help for caregivers to prevent burnout.
Conduct regular wellness checks and ensure seniors have access to quality healthcare.
Promote financial literacy among seniors to protect them from exploitation.
Encourage reporting of suspected cases of elder abuse to the relevant authorities.
